If you are a new homeowner, a new business owner, have an additional home, or renting, here is a checklist of safety features that can be included in your building we’d like you to be aware of.
SMOKE ALARMS / FIRE ALARMS
Your fire alarm or smoke alarm is a very important device to have in your home and something that should be up and running. Let’s start with one of the largest safety features, your smoke alarms. According to FEMA fire kills approximately 3,000 and injures approximately 20,000 people each year. There are many reasons these accidents could have happened, but having a working alert system in your home is vital.
Make sure that alarms are placed in sleeping areas. Wherever you, family members, or guests sleep should have smoke alarms. Alarms should also be placed between rooms if they are distant from one another, outside of sleeping quarters.
For units with split levels, smoke alarms should be installed on the upper level and adjacent on the lower level. If you are a tenant, most landlords require the tenant to maintain and take care of the smoke detector. If you are a landlord, you’re supposed to replace your tenant’s device if it is broken or malfunctioning when you test it.
Testing your fire alarm should be done once a month. Why? Detectors can give off false alarms, kitchen smoke sets alarm off more frequently, causing the batteries to die sooner, and depending if it’s hardwired or battery; if it’s hardwired, the batteries need to be functioning in case the power goes out. Test your device once a month.
CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR
Carbon monoxide detectors follow similar rules to the smoke alarms. Have them throughout the home, especially near bedrooms. Regulation is at least 10 feet within a bedroom. If your device is also a smoke detector, place it near the ceiling. Do not place these devices near windows, as drafts and other potentials contaminants could brush past it, setting it off.
Replace your entire carbon monoxide detector every five to seven years.
If you’re just moving into a new place, getting first looks at a new place, or stumble upon this when moving in, keep an eye out for exposed wiring. Exposed wires are a serious issue, wires should be treated as if the current is definitely running through it.
Exposed wiring could be the cause of someone carelessly working on something and leaving the job undone. A wire exposed out of a wall could also be the doing of a critter after chewing through building materials like drywall or wood, and they themselves cutting the wire, causing it to be exposed.
Immediately contact a Goodyear electrician if you come across any wiring in your home or business if you’re unsure about how to treat it. Turn off any electrical circuits if possible, minimize the chance of electric shock.
When flipping the switches in your home, if you hear any buzzes or hums, that is also a sign of a disconnected or damaged wire in your walls.
